What a Wheel Alignment Fixes, and What It Doesn’t

What a wheel alignment fixes is the angles of your wheels relative to each other and the road, so the car tracks straight and the tires wear evenly. It doesn’t balance the tires, and it won’t fix a vibration that shows up only at highway speed — that’s usually a wheel balancing or suspension issue, and it’s one of the most common mix-ups drivers bring to a shop.

The three angles a proper alignment adjusts are camber, toe, and caster. Camber is how much the top of the tire leans in or out from vertical when you look at the car head-on; too much lean on one side wears the inner or outer edge of that tire faster than the rest of the tread. Toe is whether the front edges of the tires point slightly toward or away from each other, and it’s the angle most responsible for a car that pulls or drifts even on a flat, straight road. Caster affects steering stability and how strongly the wheel wants to return to center after a turn, and it’s the one drivers notice least directly, usually just as steering that feels vague or overly light at speed.

What a wheel alignment fixes

A correct alignment stops uneven tire wear before it shortens the life of an otherwise good set of tires, corrects a pull to one side that isn’t caused by uneven tire pressure, and restores predictable steering response after a wheel has been knocked out of spec by a pothole or curb strike. It also tends to improve fuel economy slightly, since misaligned wheels create extra rolling resistance the engine has to work against.

What it doesn’t fix

Alignment doesn’t address a vibration that comes and goes with speed — that’s almost always a wheel balance problem, caused by uneven weight distribution around the tire and wheel rather than the angle it sits at. It also won’t correct play or looseness in steering or suspension components; if a tie rod end or ball joint is worn, an alignment shop will typically flag it and recommend replacing the part first, because aligning a wheel connected to a worn component won’t hold the setting for long. And it doesn’t compensate for tires that are simply worn unevenly already from years of driving before the misalignment was caught — the alignment stops future uneven wear, it doesn’t undo the wear already there.

A hard pothole hit, a curb strike while parking, or a recent suspension repair are the three most common reasons a car needs an alignment outside of routine service intervals. Between those events, checking alignment alongside a tire rotation catches drift before it wears down an expensive set of tires, and it’s worth adding to a pre-road-trip checklist before a long highway drive. The DOE’s vehicle maintenance guide lists alignment among the checks that pay for themselves through tire life and fuel economy alone.

If a shop recommends an alignment and you’re not sure it’s needed, ask to see the before-and-after printout most alignment machines generate — it shows the actual camber, toe, and caster numbers against the manufacturer’s spec, not just a technician’s word that something was off.
