What Causes a Car to Pull to One Side

If your car drifts toward one side of the lane when you take your hands off the wheel on a flat, straight road, the cause is almost always one of three things: uneven tire pressure, a wheel alignment problem, or a brake that’s dragging. Sorting out which one it is before you pay for a repair matters, because the fix for each is different and none of them are cheap to guess wrong on.

Start with the cheapest possibility first

Check tire pressure in all four tires before you assume anything else is wrong. A tire that’s 5 or 6 psi lower than the others creates more rolling resistance on that side, and the car will lean toward it. This is the single most common cause of a pull, and it costs nothing to rule out with a gauge you can buy for a few dollars. While you’re down there, look at the tread itself — uneven wear across the tire face, especially more wear on one edge than the other, points toward an alignment issue rather than pressure.

Road crown can also cause a mild pull that isn’t a mechanical problem at all. Most roads are built with a slight slope toward the shoulder for drainage, so a car will drift right on a crowned road even in perfect mechanical condition. Test on a flat stretch, or compare the pull in both directions of travel, before you conclude anything is actually broken.

If pressure and road crown aren’t it

A wheel alignment problem shows up as a steady pull that doesn’t change with speed and often comes with a steering wheel that sits off-center even when you’re driving straight. Hitting a deep pothole or curb hard enough to knock a wheel out of spec is a common trigger. This is a job for an alignment rack, not something to diagnose further in the driveway — a shop can tell you in minutes whether it’s a true alignment issue or something in the suspension.

A dragging brake caliper is the one that gets missed most often, partly because it can feel similar to an alignment pull but has a different signature: it often gets worse the longer you drive, sometimes accompanied by a burning smell or a wheel that’s noticeably hotter than the others after a drive. A stuck caliper keeps light pressure on the rotor even when you’re off the brake pedal, which drags that corner of the car. If you’ve also noticed unusual bouncing or a loose feeling in the suspension, get both checked in the same visit, since worn components often show up together.

Worn suspension parts, particularly on one side more than the other, can produce a pull as well, though it’s less common than the three causes above. A shop doing a proper diagnosis will usually check tire pressure and wear pattern first, then move to an alignment check, and only look at brakes and suspension if those come back clean.

Don’t ignore a persistent pull. Beyond the annoyance of fighting the wheel on every drive, it accelerates tire wear and, if the cause turns out to be a dragging brake, it’s a problem that gets worse and more expensive the longer it sits. Routine tire and alignment checks are part of the basic maintenance the Department of Energy recommends for keeping a car running efficiently, and a pull is often the first sign something on that list needs attention.
