What Causes a Car to Overheat, and What to Do Immediately
If your temperature gauge is climbing or steam is coming from under the hood, pull over and shut the engine off. What you do in the next two minutes matters more than figuring out which of the usual car overheating causes is responsible.
Do not open the radiator cap or the coolant reservoir while the engine is hot. Pressurized coolant can be well above the boiling point of water and will erupt the moment that seal breaks, causing a serious burn. Pop the hood latch to help heat escape, stand back, and let the engine sit for at least fifteen minutes before touching anything under it.
What’s actually behind the gauge climbing
Low coolant is the most common cause, usually from a slow leak at a hose clamp, the radiator, or the water pump seal. A cracked or collapsed hose can cut off flow entirely even with plenty of coolant in the system. A failed thermostat that’s stuck closed traps hot coolant near the engine instead of routing it to the radiator. And a broken cooling fan, or one that’s not kicking on, will show up specifically in stop-and-go traffic, since that’s when the car depends on the fan instead of airflow through the grille.
Less commonly, a failing water pump stops circulating coolant altogether, or a blown head gasket lets combustion gases into the cooling system, which shows up as bubbles in the reservoir or white smoke from the tailpipe. That last one is a bigger repair, and driving on it will make it worse fast. A slipping serpentine belt can cause the same climb if it’s the one driving the water pump, and it’s worth a quick visual check for cracking or glazing the next time the hood is up for a belt or timing service.
Once it’s cool enough to check
Look at the reservoir level against its low and full marks — don’t remove the radiator cap to check. If it’s low, a 50/50 coolant mix (never straight water, which freezes and corrodes at the wrong times of year) can get you moving, but treat it as a temporary fix until a shop finds the leak. If the level looks fine and the car still overheated, that points toward the thermostat, fan, or pump rather than a simple leak, and it’s not something to diagnose by guessing under the hood on the shoulder.
Driving even a short distance on an overheated engine risks warping the cylinder head, which turns a coolant hose into a head gasket job. If the gauge spikes again after you restart, or the low coolant light comes back within a mile, have it towed rather than pushed further. A temperature spike sometimes shows up alongside a dash warning rather than the gauge alone — worth knowing what that light is telling you before assuming it’s unrelated. Either way, a five-dollar coolant top-off caught early is a lot cheaper than a tow truck and a warped head.
